The evaluation is a comprehensive 3- to 5-day process. It includes pulmonary function tests (PFTs), cardiac screenings, blood work, and psychological assessments. Dr. Govini and his team also evaluate the patient’s social support system, as having dedicated caregivers is essential for long-term success.

Lungs are allocated through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). Matching is based on blood type, chest size (to ensure the lungs fit), medical urgency (calculated via a Lung Allocation Score), and the distance between the donor and the recipient.

A single lung transplant typically takes 4–6 hours, while a double lung transplant can take 8–12 hours. The clinic follows international safety standards, often utilizing ECMO (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) during surgery to support the heart and lungs, ensuring maximum stability for the patient.

Patients usually spend 3–7 days in the ICU for close monitoring. Once stable, they move to a transplant ward for another 2–3 weeks. During this time, the focus is on pain management, adjusting immunosuppressant doses, and starting “pre-hab” or early physical therapy.

Yes. Transplant recipients must take immunosuppressants daily to prevent organ rejection. You will also take “prophylactic” medications (antibiotics/antifungals) to protect against infections. Adherence to this regimen is the most critical factor in long-term survival.

Most patients experience a dramatic improvement in quality of life. Within 3–6 months, many return to work, enjoy travel, and engage in regular exercise. However, certain precautions remain—such as avoiding raw foods, staying away from crowded areas during flu season, and wearing masks in high-risk environments.
